Der Begriff Generation bezeichnet eine Gruppe von Spielen in Pokémon, die zeitlich nahe beieinander liegen. Der Hauptunterschied besteht in der Anzahl der fangbaren bzw. bis dahin bekannten Pokémon in den Spielen. Mit Pokémon Sonne und Mond befindet sich Pokémon aktuell in der siebenten Generation.
Die Hauptspiele werden den Generationen folgendermaßen zugeordnet:
- Generation I: Pokémon Rot und Blau, Pokémon Gelb
- Generation II: Pokémon Gold und Silber, Pokémon Kristall
- Generation III: Pokémon Rubin und Saphir, Pokémon Smaragd, Pokémon Feuerrot und Blattgrün
- Generation IV: Pokémon Diamant und Perl, Pokémon Platin, Pokémon HeartGold und SoulSilver
- Generation V: Pokémon Schwarz und Weiß, Pokémon Schwarz 2 und Weiß 2
- Generation VI: Pokémon X und Y, Pokémon Omega Rubin und Alpha Saphir
- Generation VII: Pokémon Sonne und Mond, Pokémon Ultrasonne und Ultramond
